Staff

The teaching staff is highly qualified, with two teachers per class. In order to provide the utmost in personal attention and instruction, our teacher/child ratios are low and meet NAEYC’s requirements. Every teacher participates in at least 20 hours per year in continuing education courses and are first aid & CPR certified.  Westminster Workshop Seminars in Early Childhood Education and the Texas Conference Weekday Ministries for Children are an example of some in-services that are attended by the staff.

Facilities

Westminster United Methodist Church provides our wonderful facilities. Each room is equipped with thirteen learning centers including blocks, art, manipulative, dramatic play and math and language.

Curriculum

Language Development is based on a blend of whole language and phonics. Day School classes incorporate “Poetry Works” as part of classroom language development. Each class supplements age appropriate enrichment resources such as the “Math Their Way” to enhance the learning experiences of each child. The Rice Literacy Program is used in the Pre-Kindergarten class. The child learns basic concepts and skills for pre-reading, writing, mathematics, science and social studies. The whole program builds a solid understanding of Pre-Reading and Pre-Math skills through naming, describing, classifying, sorting, and patterning. Special “Work Jobs” develop independence and a larger understanding of math, science, and reading.

Conferences and Reports

The teachers in all the Weekday School classes continually document formal evaluations of language development, social adjustment, motor coordination, and cognitive growth.

Parents may visit and observe in the classroom at any time by arrangement with the director and teacher. Parents are always welcome to discuss any special problems with the classroom teacher and are encouraged to advise the teachers of any situation that may affect their child’s classroom behavior and learning experience. Parent/Teacher conferences are held in October and February.

Vision and Hearing Testing

Vision and hearing testing are required by the Department of Human Resources for all children ages 4 years and older.  A licensed Speech Pathologist performs Language, Hearing, and Vision screening tests in the fall to all children who are 3 years-6 months and older in the Weekday School.
